Research activities

Dynamics research focusses on the aeroelasticity and structural dynamics phenomena in turbomachinery. Particular strengths are:

  • modelling of aero-engine  unsteady flows and associated phenomena such as rotating stall and surge
  • prediction of blade and component vibration resulting from excitation in, or interaction with, unsteady aerodynamics: flutter, forced response, buffeting
  • the influence of nonlinear interfaces on the vibration of structural assemblies
  • the integration of hybrid experimental and analytical technologies in modelling complex machinery structures

Much of the research is undertaken through the Rolls-Royce Vibration University Technology Centre, which has about 15 full-time research staff and 30 research students. For further information visit the Dynamics Group website.
