Research activities

The driving motivation is to solve real problems in industrial inspection and monitoring, achieved by conducting thorough scientific research. We therefore cover the whole range of activity from fundamental scientific studies through to the transfer of technology to industry, and we have an outstanding international reputation throughout this spectrum of activities.

At the fundamental level we are well known for the development of ultrasound wave theory, experimental methods, and modelling techniques.

At the applications level we collaborate with numerous industrial partners, and technology we have developed is now being exploited by 3 spin-out companies and through 2 other licence agreements.

Most of the research work is split between ultrasonic guided wave methods and those employing bulk waves. Furter details of projects are available on the Non-Destructive Evaluation Group website.

We are also a lead member of the UK Research Centre in Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE), which links university research groups and industrial NDE users, thereby creating a world leading centre of excellence in NDE research.
