The Compod composter processes 1.1 tonnes of food waste produced each week in catering outlets on the South Kensington Campus.
Composting food waste contributes to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, and lowers the College’s carbon footprint.
Research on the in-vessel composting unit was carried out at the College’s Centre for Environmental Control & Waste Management, in conjunction with manufacturing and technology company IMC who supplied the Compod equipment.
Imperial researchers worked to find the best composting environment, by experimenting with the temperature, the carbon and nitrogen balance, and the size of food particles.
