In writing to your elected representative(s) and/or local media, you may wish to highlight the following points:

  • Low standards of health and nutrition present major barriers to educational participation and achievement: it is estimated that up to 500 million days of school are lost to ill health in low-income countries each year.
  • Inclusive school health and nutrition (SHN) uses schools as a platform to deliver a package of relevant health and nutrition services and learning through a comprehensive programme.
  • Therefore inclusive SHN supports children – particularly the poorest and most vulnerable – to enjoy their right to education and promotes broader child development.
  • International donors such as the UK’s Department for International Development, the Global Partnership for Education and the World Bank should support national governments to provide inclusive SHN services for all children.
  • The Sustainable Development Goals (the new global development framework that is due to come into force from 2016) should promote inclusive SHN programmes for all children.
