To do this the College will:

  1. Adopt policies and technologies which reduce pollution by College activities of land, water courses and air.
  2. Provide specifications and briefing documents aimed at low emissions from new equipment, for example low NOx emissions from boilers.
  3. Provide policy to avoid unnecessary disposal to drains of chemical and other polluting waste.
  4. Take care to avoid unnecessary diffused pollution from use of pesticides and fertilisers.
  5. Monitor the possibilities of pollution to local areas from light, noise and odours from College activities.
  6. Encourage good neighbourliness from students and staff and encourage links to be made to local organisations for mutual benefit.
  7. Providing adequate waste disposal facilities to avoid litter and improper disposal.

Imperial College pollution policy

The College commits to provide its staff, students and local community a higher quality of life through having a clean, safe and accessible natural, urban and rural environment and to value and protect the environment, conserving and enhancing it for future generations while ensuring all new developments are planned and designed with minimal adverse impact on either the historic or the natural environment.

The College will assist the local authority, where required, in reviewing and assessing ambient air quality in the areas local to its facilities to ensure levels of particular pollutants are compliant with the Air Quality (England) Regulations 2000 and Amending Regulations 2002, and any authority action plan.

For new development the College will ensure the development is safe and suitable for use for the purpose for which it is intended and determine that the land is suitable for the development or can be made so by remedial action.

Pollution targets

The College acknowledges its responsibilities:

  1. To meet and/or exceed its legal obligations.
  2. To carefully control any materials which are discharged to air, land, sewer or water course to protect human health and the environment.
  3. To take sensible precautions if any work is carried out on an asbestos-containing product.
  4. To ensure we minimise noise pollution.
  5. To require developers to demonstrate that they use best practicable means to keep noise to a minimum. (No noisy work will normally be permitted on Sundays and bank holidays. For operations outside of these hours demonstration that the works cannot be carried out at any other time and that items of plant and equipment are operated and maintained so that their use causes the minimum amount of noise will be required.)
