Dr Michael Fertleman (Consultant Physician & Barrister)
BA(Law) MA MRCP FFFLM ILTM Of Gray's Inn, Barrister 

Michael studied preclinical medicine at Cambridge University and then completed a law degree. He took his clinical studies at Imperial College under a Harmsworth Scholarship. He is now a consultant in general medicine, geriatrics and orthopaedic rehabilitation at St Mary's Hospital, London. Michael is passionate about teaching, has been selected for an Imperial College award for teaching excellence and is a member of the Higher Education Academy.

Michael is the lead clinician for a physician led elderly trauma service at Imperial College within their Academic Health Sciences Centre. He previously set a similar service up at Northwick Park Hospital.  He is also a qualified barrister and a specialist in litigation avoidance. He has lectured widely and internationally on a variety of aspects of medical law.

Dr James Piers (Solicitor and Medical Doctor)

James is a dual qualified solicitor and medical doctor.  As a clinical negligence solicitor for Aspire Law he represents patients who have suffered spinal cord injury as a consequence of medical error.  Aspire Law is a specialist law firm that only represents clients with spinal cord injuries and which passes half of its profits to the Aspire spinal injury charity.  James has been working in the field of clinical negligence since 2006 and prior to joining Aspire Law he ran a varied clinical negligence caseload including most areas of medicine.  

Prior to becoming a solicitor, James practised as a doctor in the NHS for 6 years.  Most of his clinical experience was in surgical specialties, predominantly orthopaedics and neurosurgery.

Tony Allen (Solicitor & Mediator)

Tony is one of the UK’s best-known mediators of clinical and injury disputes, recognised as such by legal directories since mediators were first rated.  As a practising solicitor for over 30 years, he handled claimant and defendant injury claims of all types.  Accredited by CEDR in 1996, he first mediated clinical claims in 1997.  In 2000, he became a full-time Director of CEDR, and since 2011 has been a freelance mediator specialising in mediating clinical, injury and Human Rights claims, working throughout the UK, and also Ireland and South Africa.  He has mediated well over 400 claims of all types, and over 140 clinical claims of all kinds, including multi-million pound birth injury and brain damage cases, and right to life litigation cases.  He trains mediators for CEDR world-wide and also lectures and trains clinical negligence mediation internationally.  His book Mediating clinical claims was published by Bloomsbury in April 2018, and a second edition of his book Mediation Law and Civil Practice was published in December 2018
