This new post is part of an ongoing major collaboration between the Chemical and Electrical & Electronic Engineering Departments of Imperial College London with ABB, one of the world’s leading providers of automation and control solutions.
The aim of the project is to develop next-generation sensor technology for the process industry employing wireless sensors that are smaller, lower-cost and easier to deploy than the sensor products available today. Prototype sensor systems for the measurement of key liquid process variables such as temperature, pressure, flow, pH and conductivity will be demonstrated both at bench scale and in a pilot plant.
Duties and responsibilities
The post holder will lead the electrical engineering elements of the project, working closely with a second researcher in the Chemical Engineering Department who will be responsible for the chemical engineering aspects. The work will involve close collaboration with technical staff in ABB in both the Corporate Research Centre and relevant business units.
Responsibilities will include
• Identify, procure, and evaluate commercial and semi-commercial micro-sensors suitable for autonomous process measurement in liquid phase systems
• Contribute to the development of the overall micro-sensor system concept
• Lead on the system level and detailed design of the micro-sensor system electronics
• Contribute to other aspects of the micro-sensor system design e.g. package design
• Lead on the fabrication of prototype micro-sensor systems
• Validate the performance of the prototype micro-sensor systems in a laboratory scale test rig
• Validate the performance of the prototype micro-sensor systems using an industrial pilot plant
• Liaise with ABB staff on technical matters
• Prepare presentations for delivery to ABB
• Produce journal and conference publications from the research
• Provide management and leadership for junior members of the research groups such as PhD students
• Undertake teaching duties within the Department as required.
• Perform any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post as directed by your line manager
The successful candidate should hold a first degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or Physical Sciences and hold, or be near completion of, a PhD (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics or a related discipline.
The candidate will be required to write for publication in international scientific journals and deliver technical presentations. They will require knowledge of the physical principles underlying sensors for liquid properties such as temperature, pressure, flow, pH, conductivity. They will also require general knowledge of measurement and sensor science/engineering including data acquisition.
Excellent verbal communication skills are required and the ability to deal with a wide range of people, as well as the ability to write clearly and concisely to a level consistent with publication in highly regarded international journals.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £33,380 - £35,061 per annum.
