Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious researcher to join a dynamic research group and carry out innovative methodological research that will help answer important questions in population health and global health. The position will involve the development, implementation, and application of novel methodology in statistics and data science. The research is at the cutting edge of global health science, and arises from collaborative research with the World Health Organization and with a worldwide network of scientists from most of the world’s countries, which will give the work far-reaching scientific and policy impact and visibility.

The position will be in the Environment and Global Health Research Group. The group is internationally renowned for its research on health forecasting and spatiotemporal analysis of multi-dimensional health data. The research group is highly interdisciplinary and the post holder will also work closely with statisticians, epidemiologists, and clinicians in the group, at the School of Public Health, and at the MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health as well as at other leading global universities

Duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate must have an exceptional aptitude for analytical and critical thinking about the nature of data and scientific problems and quantitative methods in statistics and data science; excellent programming skills; strong communication capabilities; motivation for problem solving; aptitude for interdisciplinary research and teamwork; and ability to work and learn independently. There will be scope for the post holder to transition from mentored research to an independent research agenda.

Essential requirements

The ideal candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent in applied mathematics, (computational) statistics, physics, biostatistics, computer science, systems dynamics/modelling, econometrics, demography or a related quantitative subject; have substantial experience with statistical and/or mathematical and/or computational methods and models, and with management and analysis of large, multi-dimensional and heterogeneous datasets; and have track record of technical and scholarly excellence as demonstrated by publications and methods development and application
