Job description

Job summary

We are seeking a microbiological Research Assistant to work on antimicrobial resistance in the major mould pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. You will be primarily based in the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis (GIDA) within the School of Public Health at Imperial College London. The post is funded by a Wellcome Trust funded 4-year Collaborative Award, led by Prof Matthew Fisher, and will investigate the escalating incidence of drug-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus coinfections in patients with pulmonary conditions such as cystic fibrosis, influenza and COVID-19.

This is a very rewarding position amongst a dynamic team of international multi-disciplinary laboratories that have a long history of successful collaboration. Based within MRC GIDA and Abdul Latif Jameel Institute for Disease and Emergency Analytics (JIDEA) in the Imperial College School of Public Health, the post-holder will be integrated into a world-leading disease research environment with excellent career prospects.

Duties and responsibilities

We are looking for a candidate with outstanding experience in wet-laboratory microbiology of infectious organisms, preferably fungi. The role will be primarily to collect, isolate and culture Aspergillus fumigatus, to undertake microbiological investigations and to test resistance profiles against panels of antifungal drugs.

In addition, the post holder will extract DNA for genome-sequencing, archive the fungus, and support ongoing molecular diagnostics, fungal phenotyping and epidemiological surveillance.

Essential requirements

You will have good project coordination skills and the ability to liaise with the wider team, work to deadlines, and to be able to travel. You will be based within the internationally competitive ‘Fungal Pathogens’ group in the newly-refurbished Royal Society laboratories in Imperial College at St Mary’s.

You will also have a BSc or equivalent in a biology-related field and appropriate laboratory technical skills and solid working experience of handling microbes in a Hazard Group 2 laboratory environment.

Further information

This post is full time and fixed term for 12 months in the first instance and will be based at the St Mary’s Campus, Paddington. Imperial College is supportive of flexible working. The College is happy to discuss the possibility of implementing such arrangements for this post, with suitably qualified people, subject to operational requirements.
