IGHI’s May Forum gathered to discussed how healthcare is impacted by conflict.
With war being an ever-increasing constant in today’s society, the healthcare of afflicted populations are affected in various ways. This month, IGHI’s Global Health Forum hosted four speakers from different disciplines to discuss its impact.
Providing an engineering perspective, Professor Anthony Bull, Director of the Centre for Blast Injury Studies and the NIHR Global Health Research Group on Post-Conflict Trauma (PrOTeCT) kicked off the event with the first talk. He gave attendees an overview of the Centre’s work and stressed the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in dealing with healthcare in conflict.
Dr Esmita Charani, Senior Lead Pharmacist at the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medicine then presented on the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance in conflict countries. In the third presentation of the Forum, Shehan Hettiaratchy, Lead Surgeon and Major Trauma Director at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust talked through his experiences of post-conflict healthcare.
The final speaker of the event, Dr Emily Mayhew who is Imperial’s lead for the Paediatric Blast Injury Partnership gave us an insight into the work of the partnership.

IGHI’s monthly Global Health Forums provide a platform to bring together Imperial researchers, students, and staff from across all of Imperial’s Faculties to highlight, discuss and disseminate findings on current research and innovations on relevant global health topics. The Forums encourage interdisciplinary discussions with the intention that they will foster inter-Faculty research initiatives and leverage the immense strengths of Imperial College to resolve global health priorities of the early 21st Century.
The next forum will take place next on 13 June in Anthony De Rothschild lecture Theatre in St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London and will look at the Road Traffic Injury: Impact, Insight and Intervention in the Era of Big Data.
