The Section of Virology is based primarily on the St. Mary’s campus, where 12 independently-funded principal investigators, including five Wellcome Trust Investigators, lead research groups ranging from five to 12 members. In addition, Professor Xiao-Ning Xu leads the Human Immunology laboratory on the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital campus.
Research in the Section of Virology covers a wide range of pathogens, techniques, and mechanisms, with a strong emphasis on three main themes:
- host-virus interactions, especially the host immune response,
- viruses that cause human cancer,
- respiratory viruses.
There is major long-term research funding from the European Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, and Bloodwise. The Section also runs a highly successful Master’s programme, the MSc in Molecular Biology and Pathology of Viruses, and hosts the annual series of four prestigious lectures in experimental medicine, the Almroth Wright Lectures.
