Course overview
What can ten thinkers tell us about the world—and about ourselves? This focused and engaging course offers an introduction to the ideas, lives, and historical contexts of ten major philosophers within the Western tradition.
Ranging from antiquity to the modern era, each session is devoted to a single figure. Guided by Dr Matthew Rowe, you will explore the central questions each philosopher confronted, the social and intellectual worlds they inhabited, and the lasting impact of their ideas on subsequent thought.
Philosophers studied include Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Nietzsche, and de Beauvoir, among others. Through these case studies, the course builds a clear and accessible understanding of how philosophical thinking has evolved—while also returning to a set of enduring human concerns.
Along the way, you will be encouraged to reflect on how these ideas resonate today, considering their relevance to contemporary life, culture, and debate.
No previous experience of philosophy is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to think!
