Initiative overview
The Jameel Institute – Realtime Intelligent Support for Emergencies (Jameel Institute-RISE) initiative aims to help humanitarian agencies respond to crises in conflict zones by providing real-time data and modelling across traumatic injuries, malnutrition, mortality and vaccination planning, to better inform aid efforts.
The Jameel Institute – Realtime Intelligent Support for Emergencies (JI-RISE)
Recognising the complexity and protractred nature of humanitarian crises, Jameel Institute-RISE was developed by the Jameel Institute, Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Supported by Community Jameel, an international organisation that advances science and learning, and co-founder of the Jameel Institute, Jameel Institute-RISE will deliver critical data on traumatic injuries, malnutrition, mortality, and vaccination planning to humanitarian agencies and policymakers.
Under the careful leadership of Imperial College London's Dr Oliver Watson and LSHTM's Prof Bhargavi Rao, Jameel Institute-RISE collaborates with international organisations including the World Health Organisation, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Médecins Sans Frontières and the Geneva Water Hub. The initiative’s key mission is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of humanitarian interventions and response, ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most.
Collaborating to generate impact
In a joint effort, Jameel Institute-RISE staff are deployed to the World Health Organization’s Acute Events Analytics Unit to support disease outbreak response plans and work closely with researchers to improve public health responses. The initiative's innovative tools, such as the 'Jameel Institute Crisis Vaccination Planner ' and predictive models for mortality and traumatic injuries, provide actionable insights during crises.
“In conflict zones like Gaza, the lack of detailed data on health impacts can hamper effective responses. Our mission is to create robust models to understand these impacts, ensuring decision-making processes for allocating scarce resources are more transparent, accountable, and focus on the most vulnerable people.”
Dr Oliver Watson, Jameel Institute-RISE Research Lead
Paving the way in humanitarian response
Jameel Institute-RISE addresses the evolving nature of modern conflicts by setting new standards in humanitarian response through cutting-edge epidemiological and mortality models. The initiative not only tackles immediate health impacts but also considers the broader repercussions of disrupted healthcare services, changing the way humanitarian agencies can respond well into the future.
Building on the foundation established by the Jameel Institute, which gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jameel Institute-RISE aims to extend its impact to humanitarian crises, saving lives and improving health outcomes in conflict-affected regions worldwide.
