Imperial academics elected Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering

Academics from Imperial College London have been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of their outstanding and continuing contributions to the profession.

They join a community of almost 1,700 eminent engineers on a mission to use the power of engineering to build a sustainable society and create an inclusive economy that works for everyone. New Fellows are nominated and elected by existing Fellows.

Professor Richard Craster

Professor Craster is the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. He said:

"I am delighted to be elected to being a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. It is a huge honour, particularly as I am a mathematician by training.

"Imperial, and especially my colleagues, students and collaborators, have been an essential part of everything I have done. They have inspired and driven our work, taking mathematical ideas into engineering and wave physics, from new start-ups to real-world inspection techniques for finding cracks in nuclear reactors, and much more besides.

"So this is also an opportunity to say thank you both to them, and to my other collaborators far and wide who have shared in the work and in its success."

Professor Alastair Donaldson

Professor Donaldson is Professor of Programming Languages in the Department of Computing. He said:

“It is a great honour to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering - the home of engineering in the UK. In today's digital world, software engineering is one of the most important engineering disciplines, and it is undergoing seismic change with the rise of AI. I am excited to contribute to the Academy’s work in understanding and shaping what these changes mean for software engineering, and for the future of engineering more broadly.”

Professor Paul Fennell

Professor Fennell is Professor of Clean Energy in the Department of Chemical Engineering. He said:

"I am delighted to have been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.  I look forward to helping out with their important work, in particular within the areas of climate change mitigation and policy.  I would like to thank my current and previous students and co-workers for their hard work and support along the way"

Professor Lidija Zdravkovic

Professor Zdravkovic is Professor of Computational Geomechanics in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She said:

“I am deeply honoured to have been elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and excited about what we can achieve together. As a civil engineer specialising in geotechnical engineering, I see both significant challenges and unprecedented opportunities for engineers to make a lasting impact through the creation and stewardship of infrastructure that supports a more sustainable and resilient society.”

Professor Raul Vazquez-Diaz

Professor Vazquez-Diaz is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Engineering Fellow in Aerodynamics and Chief of Aerothermal Technology at Rolls-Royce. He is also Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Chairman of the European Turbomachinery Society (Euroturbo).
