Professor Omar Matar has begun his term as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering today, 1 October 2026.
Reporting to the Provost and Deputy President, in this role Professor Matar will be responsible for all aspects of the Faculty’s strategy, operations, and finances. As a senior member of the University Management Board, he will also make a significant contribution to the strategic direction, management, and development of Imperial as a whole.
An Imperial alum, Professor Matar joined as a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering in 1998 after completing his PhD at Princeton University.
Since then, he has held leadership roles as Vice Dean (Education) for the Faculty and as Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering.
Professor Matar leads the Matar Fluids Group, which focuses on multiphase flows, computational fluid dynamics, and emerging technologies including machine learning and immersive tools. He was co-founding CEO of the Imperial-Turing spin-off Quaisr in 2020 and also co-founded 2D Nano in 2023.
On starting his new role he said: "My ambition as Dean is to help ensure that Engineering at Imperial leads boldly on the defining challenges of our time, through outstanding education, transformative research, and a culture of innovation and enterprise. Central to that ambition is a truly inclusive Faculty, because the best engineering emerges when diverse people, ideas, and experiences come together."
As previously announced, former Dean Professor Nigel Brandon takes up a new role as Vice-President (Corporate Engagement) and Professor Jason Hallett begins his term as Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering today.
