The Department of Chemical Engineering ranked first in the UK

Imperial College London's Department of Chemical Engineering has been ranked first in the UK by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027, recognising the strength of its teaching, student experience, research, and graduate outcomes.

The result reflects the Department's sustained staff commitment to deliver an outstanding education alongside world-leading research and innovation.

Professor Omar Matar, Head of Department, Chemical Engineering, said:

“This is a fantastic achievement for our whole community. Being ranked number one in the UK is recognition of the ambition, commitment, and hard work of staff across the Department over many years. In particular, I want to recognise the many colleagues who contribute to the student experience every day - from our academic and teaching staff to our laboratory teams, course operations and professional services colleagues, this result reflects a collective commitment to giving our students an exceptional education.”

The Department’s achievement builds on longstanding strengths in research and education. The Department is home to more than 600 undergraduate students, alongside a large and thriving postgraduate and research community, with a focus across areas including clean energy and climate change, sustainable manufacturing, healthcare and advanced materials.

The result comes as Imperial celebrates a strong performance across the 2027 guide, having been named University of the Year 2027 and ranked third overall in the UK.
