Welcoming Professor Jason Hallett as Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering

From 1 October 2026, Professor Jason Hallett succeeds Professor Omar Matar, who moves to the role of Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College London.


Professor Hallett is a Professor of Sustainable Chemical Technology and holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies. His research explores how chemistry and chemical engineering can address some of the major challenges of the sustainable economy, including developing new approaches to biomass, waste, and recycling.
 
Professor Hallett joined Imperial in 2006 as a Marshall-Sherfield Postdoctoral Fellow and has held a number of academic positions at Imperial College London, becoming Professor in 2018.
 
Internationally recognised for pioneering contributions to ionic liquids and sustainable chemical technologies, Professor Hallett has established a strong track record in translating fundamental research into impactful commercial applications. This research has underpinned the creation of 12 spin-out companies, demonstrating significant societal and economic impact.
 
Professor Hallett also serves as Co-Director of the UKRI Supergen Bioenergy Hub.
 
In 2024, Professor Hallett received the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Princess Royal Silver Medal and the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Open Prize for the Environment. In 2025, the Royal Society awarded the Mullard Award in recognition of pioneering research in sustainable chemical technologies and their translation into industry.
 
Professor Hallett holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maine and a PhD from Georgia Tech, both in the US.
