The Class of 1981 reunites after 45 years

The Department of Chemical Engineering was delighted to welcome alumni from the Class of 1981 back to Imperial College London for a special reunion visit, offering an exciting opportunity to reconnect with the department, and each other.

The visit featured a guided tour, showcasing the department's facilities and highlighting the continued development of the teaching and research spaces since the alumni graduated. The reunion provided a valuable opportunity for former classmates to revisit familiar surroundings, share memories of their time at Imperial, and reflect on the department's progress.

A tour of the department brought back many memories, particularly returning to our old seats in Lecture Theatre 1. Russ Gilbert Former student, Class of 1981

Russ Gilbert, former student and co-organiser of the get-together stated: "After 45 years, it was wonderful to reunite with eleven former chemical engineering classmates, many of whom we hadn’t seen since graduating. Despite the years, our friendship and sense of humour were as familiar as ever. A tour of the department brought back many memories, particularly returning to our old seats in Lecture Theatre 1. "

Professor Omar Matar, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome back members of the Class of 1981. Our alumni are an integral part of our community, and it is always rewarding to see them reconnect with the Department and with one another. Visits such as these provide an opportunity to celebrate our shared history whilst showcasing how the Department continues to evolve through world-leading research, education and innovation.”

Staff were pleased to meet with the visiting alumni and celebrate the lasting connection between the department and its graduates. The visit underscored the importance of the department's global alumni community and the role it continues to play in supporting and celebrating the achievements of Chemical Engineering graduates.

Nicole Kempton, Director of Alumni Engagement, said: “It’s inspiring to see so many alums return to Imperial after 40 years. It’s a testament to the lifelong connection our alumni form with this incredible institution and the impact they continue to have on the university long after graduation.”
