Natural Sciences Showcase presentation winners announced

Last week the Faculty of Natural Sciences celebrated cutting-edge research happening across all five of its departments at the Natural Sciences Showcase.

The one-day event, which took place on Wednesday 23 September, provided a vital snapshot of the work happening across Mathematics, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and the Centre for Environmental Policy, with academics and PhD students delivering talks. Staff, students and attendees were able to vote as part of the PhD students poster competition.

The Natural Sciences Showcase also featured a panel session titled 'Why should we support curiosity-driven research?', highlighting how fundamental science can lead to unexpected and transformative breakthroughs.

The winning presentations were announced following the event. Find the winners below:

Posters

  • Best poster: Thea Preston (Department of Chemistry)
  • Runner-up (shared) : Harriet Eyles (Centre for Environmental Policy) and Cesar Silva de Freitas (Department of Physics)
  • People’s Choice Award: Shana Winston (Department of Physics)

Talks

  • First prize: Rowan Bailey (Department of Chemistry)
  • Runner up: Katarina Piponi (Department of Life Sciences)

Professor Riccardo Sapienza, Vice-Dean of Research for the Faculty of Natural Sciences, said: "Thank you again for joining us for this year’s Showcase. I hope you have enjoyed the excellent talks and poster session. It has been fantastic to learn more about the breadth of cutting-edge research taking place across the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
