Maternal Genomic Health Research Workshop Report

In September 2023, Genomics England (GE) launched a funding call for community groups to deliver one day workshops to explore cultural barriers to participation in maternal genomic health research. The goals were also to better understand the barriers these communities might face to participate in research and to gain insights into enhancing recruitment of underrepresented communities to future studies in genomic sequencing.

This report outlines community insights from two workshops which were co-developed with the Mosaic Community Trust's core staff and Health and Wellbeing leads and held in November 2023.

Early life respiratory infections and their impact on lung age

Read the summary report from our Zoom call on 15 January 2024 with parents, guardians, and carers about their views on a Medical Research Council (MRC) grant application exploring early life respiratory infections and how this impacts how the lungs age, grow, and develop to improve healthy life expectancy.

'Healthy Homes Hub' Public Involvement Insight Report

Read the summary report from our Zoom call on 20 March 2024 with a selection of Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Community Partners linked to relevant Imperial BRC research themes.

The funding application focused on the challenge area ‘Indoor environments in a net zero world’ which is co-funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). This report includes attendees’ views and feedback on the potential facilitators and barriers around home improvements faced by communities and individuals.

Diet and nutrition event report

Read the summary from an event held on 25 October 2022, which discussed nutrition and diet for adults and children with a Somali community in Hounslow at the Al-Furqan Education Trust.

The report includes insights on aspects of gut health important to the Somali community.

People’s Research Cafés

The People’s Research Café is a café with a twist. Visitors are welcomed to sit down at a table co-hosted by an Imperial College London researcher and a public contributor whose role is to help the conversation flow freely. Over a free hot drink, visitors find out about the researcher’s project and will be asked for their opinions on it. The researchers are then expected to use this feedback from visitors to improve their projects. People’s Research Cafés have taken place at the Great Exhibition Road Festival, and in community venues in Ealing and White City.

Diabetes and cardiovascular health

Read the summary report from our event on 12 November 2024 with the EKTA Community. EKTA is a mental health support group located in Harrow, catering to individuals aged 55 and above.

The session was delivered with researchers from the Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Theme on Multiple Long-Term Conditions and covered health information on type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular health, and sought community members' feedback on how to generate high-quality research (clinical trials) that meet the needs of people living with type 2 diabetes and their communities.

Immersive Virtual Reality lung journey activity

Read the summary report from our event on 28 February 2025 in collaboration with the NIHR Nottingham BRC and the BIOREME Network . BIOREME is a collaborative research network with partners across the UK and internationally.

The session was delivered by BIOREME researchers and the project manager at the Imperial College London Invention Rooms. The session aimed to evaluate BIOREME’s Virtual Reality (VR) project with Community Partners and people with lived experience of lung diseases.
