Theme Lead and Champion

Prof Sandrine Heutz

Prof Sandrine Heutz

Prof Sandrine Heutz is on the management board of the CPE and is leading our theme on emerging technologies. Sandrine is based in materials and her research interests are focused on magnetic properties of molecular thin films, spintronic applications, novel fabrication methods for oxides, detailed structural characterisation of films and interfaces, and nanowire devices.

Prof Matthew Fuchter

Prof Matthew Fuchter

Prof Matthew Fuchter in the Chemistry Department is Champion of this theme. One of the most active areas of research within Matt's group is the exploration of ways in which chiral materials can be used to enable/improve function in a range of technological applications, particularly organic electronic devices.

Research Highlights

Spin-controlling materials win prestigious Horizon Prize

An international team of scientists working on chiral materials have won the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Materials Chemistry Division Horizon Prize.

Spiky materials to "pop" bacteria

Researchers have created intricately patterned materials that mimic antimicrobial, adhesive and drag reducing properties found in natural surfaces.

Twisting light

New insights into the "handedness" of materials.
