Theme Lead and Champion

Dr Piers Barnes

Dr Piers Barnes is on the management board of the CPE and is leading our theme on emerging technologies. Piers is based in the department of physics and primarily investigates charge carrier behaviour with further interests in neuromorphic computing and memristors.

Dr Jessica Wade

Dr Jessica Wade in the Department of Materials is Champion of this theme. Jess' research considers new materials for optoelectronic, spintronic and quantum devices, with a focus on chiral molecular materials.

Research Highlights

Controlling spin

Materials research that could help with the development of low-power next-generation technologies.

Spiky materials to "pop" bacteria

Researchers have created intricately patterned materials that mimic antimicrobial, adhesive and drag reducing properties found in natural surfaces.

Twisting light

New insights into the "handedness" of materials.
