Safe drinking water is a cornerstone of public health in Europe. Structurally diverse fluorinated compounds, including per- and
polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are widely detected in drinking water and pose potential health risks due to their persistence and
bioaccumulation. However, their transformations during chlorination, a common disinfection method in the UK and EU, and the
resulting health risks remain largely unexplored, creating critical barriers to safe water and evidence-based regulation.
