COSMOS
Investigating the long-term health of mobile phone users.
Welcome to UK COSMOS
The COSMOS Study (Cohort Study of Mobile Phone Use and Health) is one of the world’s largest long-term studies investigating mobile phone use and health. The COSMOS study examines whether long-term use of mobile phones and other wireless technologies may affect health. By following the phone use and health of participants over many years across several countries, the study is designed to provide clearer and more reliable evidence on this important issue of scientific and public concern.
UK COSMOS is the UK arm of this international project, which follows approximately 300,000 participants across six European countries, including more than 100,000 people in the UK.
Upcoming COSMOS Follow-Up Survey
As technology evolves, UK COSMOS continues to investigate how people use mobile phones and other wireless technologies. We are carrying out a third survey as part of our continued long-term study of health and mobile phone use. This next phase will update information on participants’ mobile phone habits, including 5G use, social media, night-time phone use, and sleep. It will also collect data on lifestyle, and mental and cognitive health.
By linking survey responses with mobile phone traffic data from the operators (with participants’ consent) and health records, the study investigates how patterns of technology use change over time and whether they are associated with health conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, fertility, and neurodegenerative disorders.
