About the Centre

The Care Research & Technology Centre (CR&T) is one of eight research centres within the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI). Based at Imperial College London, the Centre works collaboratively with the University of Surrey and Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SABP).

Minder and MinderCare

Behind much of the research within the Care Research & Technology Centre is a technology platform we have developed to bring research and care directly into the homes of people living with dementia.

Minder, our smart home system, links discrete sensors in the home to clinicians and researchers. We use this technology to deliver MinderCare, a clinical service, that supports people living with dementia to remain safe and independent in their homes.

A conversation with our participants

The UK DRI Care Research & Technology Centre: New Horizons in Dementia Care is a film that explores how we are developing smart homes to help people live well with dementia in their own homes. The film offers an insight into the perspectives of our participants, researchers and partners. It addresses some of the challenges of our work, whilst highlighting the short-term and long-term impact our work is having.

We have a range of facilities across our sites at Imperial and the University of Surrey. Our facilities help us carry out a range of research; from non-invasive brain stimulation to smart floors and radars which monitor activity in a model home environment.

Research programmes

We have a unique multidisciplinary team of CR&T investigators with expertise in computer science engineering, synthetic biology, neuroscience, and clinical medicine. A cross-cutting data science programme links our research to the rest of the UK DRI. An in-house software engineering team supports the flexible development of new computing capabilities and our unique patient engagement programme, led by the Helix Centre at Imperial, brings the views of people living with dementia to the forefront.
