What is Made Here Travels Out

What makes an area special?

Is it the place? Is it its history? Is it the people? Or its sense of purpose?

What makes White City feel like White City? What is the neighbourhood’s DNA?

Through a range of different workshops connecting local people to staff, students and researchers from Imperial who live or work on the White City Campus, artists AYLO and SECA (aka Hayley and Christian) took your insight to capture the essence of White City for a new mural at Stadium House, What is Made Here Travels Out.

Your ideas helped to shape this new unique, distinctive, and place-based artwork capturing the DNA of the new White City Campus and the local area. Read more about the artwork and the process behind it in the Imperial News article.

What to look out for...

A place of knowledge, education and learning

The book is a symbol of knowledge, information and ideas shared amongst the community, while the television pin badge represents White City's role as a centre for broadcasting and bringing people together. The conical flask, resting on a cornerstone, illustrates the scientific heritage of Imperial and how today's research is built upon generations of learning rooted in this location.

A place that nurtures and observes

The white butterflies link bioengineering research to local volunteer groups that nurture green spaces and take environmental action in White City. The flowers and fauna reflect the local Japanese garden in Hammersmith Park. As a legacy from the White City exhibition, the garden continues to provide a place of relaxation, contemplation and play.

A place of connection and shared moments

The circuitry suggests connectivity, exchange and movement. It refers to transport lines, the finish line from the 1908 Olympics, and celebrates scientific and design breakthroughs. The artwork’s title, What is Made Here Travels Out, reflects ideas of travelling between places and people.

Public art on White City Campus

The Stadium House Mural is a pilot public art project for White City Campus.

We have a long-term ambition to incorporate public art in the development of White City Campus. We hope that original, thought-provoking, creative artworks in our public spaces will enhance the day-to-day experience of those working, living and visiting White City Campus.

This pilot project was an opportunity to work with the community, from within Imperial and across the local area, to test and learn about how we can work together to create inspiring, considered public art which is responsive to its context.

About the artists

AYLO and SECA are a muralist duo with 30 years of experience creating socially engaged public artworks that connect communities, honour local heritage and address global issues through the power of art. They have created work with communities from Mexico to Morocco; Leeds to Lightpool.

Their approach combines large scale productions with accessible community engagement to ensure that what they leave behind is not just paint on a wall but a shared landmark rooted in its community.
