I’ll give a general survey of some central results on algebraic surfaces, and sketch out the classification (over the complex numbers). Most of this will be drawn from Beauville’s book, but I might also talk about the E_6 root lattice on the cubic surface (or other root systems for del Pezzo surfaces), or discuss some examples of surfaces of general type.
