Biography

Walter Marcotti is based in the Department of Biomedical Science at the University of Sheffield. He is interested in how the auditory system develops and processes sound, and how genetic defects can lead to deafness. He focuses on the physiological properties of mammalian sensory hair cells with a range of techniques including electrophysiology, calcium imaging and molecular biology. These enable him to explore the functional mechanisms required to differentiate the molecular machinery for sound encoding and to discover how inner hair cell synapses control the transfer of sound information to auditory fibres in vitro and in vivo.
