Overview

This event, organised by the Health Economics, Policy and Management Group at Imperial College Business School welcomes Portugal’s Secretary of State for Health, Professor Fernando Araújo, and Professor Lord Ara Darzi, the former Health Minister in the United Kingdom, to discuss examples of value-based care and the role they can play in addressing the quality, equity and sustainability challenges faced by today’s health care systems. Following years of austerity, the Portuguese Government is implementing a range of reforms to revitalise the health care system and improve its long-term outlook. Patient-centeredness, a strengthened primary care, improved coordination of chronic care, a better use of information systems and pay for performance, coupled with health promotion efforts, promise to give new momentum to health systems that have been under severe strain during a prolonged economic crisis.
