The aim of this talk is to motivate two of the central notions in Hodge theory – namely ‘variations of Hodge structure’ and ‘mixed Hodge structures’. After giving some generalities about Hodge structures, we focus on the case of Riemann surfaces, describing their period domains and the mixed Hodge structure on a degeneration of a genus two curve.
