SYNOPSIS:
An introduction to the fundamental processes involved in the scattering and stopping of energetic particles in solids. This will cover the processes of elastic scattering, cross sections, stopping power ( nuclear and electronic) and general applications of ions ranging in energy from 100eV to 10 MeV.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Professor of Physics, University of Newcastle (Australia) and was the head of the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences for over 12 years.
Professor John O’Connor has extensive experience in surface structure and composition analysis using Ion Surface Scattering with ions of energy from 100eV to 100 MeV. He has been particularly active in developing enhancements to obtain composition information of materials over ranges from the first atomic layer to the first 1-10 nm of a material.
His research interests are in materials science, radiation effects in medical physics, radiation resistant materials for potential use in high radiation environments and science communication.
