Abstract

Energy expert Keith Barnham describes his vision for solar power in conversation with Physics alumnus John Evans in this user’s guide to the solar revolution.

Professor Keith Barnham founded the Quantum Photovoltaic Group in the Physics Department at Imperial in 1989. The group has pioneered the application of quantum wells and quantum dots to photovoltaics. The group’s Strain-Balanced Quantum Well Solar Cell is being commercially exploited by Imperial spin out company QuantaSol in single, and multi-junction configurations.

John Evans (Physics 1982) has worked in teaching, consulting and insurance since graduating from Imperial. He is known as an engineer working in risk, safety and the environment, but at heart has remained an inquiring scientist, working informally with other amateur astronomers to refine techniques for improving star photography from London’s light polluted skies. John is a Committee Member of Friends of Imperial, which has co-produced this event.
