Biography
Dr Edna Adan Ismail SRN, CMB, SCM

Dr Edna Adan Ismail is a UK trained Nurse-Midwife who was the first qualified Nurse-Midwife in Somaliland. She has worked extensively in Maternal and Child Health for the World Health Organization (WHO) and was the WHO Representative in the Republic of Djibouti for several years. She subsequently served as Minister of Social Affairs and Foreign Minister of Somaliland and was The First Lady of Somaliland (1993–2002).
Mrs. Adan Ismail founded the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital, a major referral and teaching hospital in Somaliland, in 2002 and opened the Edna Adan University in 2012, which trains Nurses, Midwives, Laboratory Technicians, Pharmacists, and Public Health students. She is an activist and pioneer in the struggle for the abolition of female circumcision. She is also President of the Organization for Victims of Torture. Amongst her many accolades, in 2010 Mrs Ismail was knighted ’Che- valier dans l’ordre Nationale de la Legion d’Honneur’ of France.
Mrs. Adan Ismail will talk about her Foundation, the Edna Adan Hospital Foundation, with particular reference to issues of FGM and maternity services and capacity building.
