This course is a half day course aimed at anyone taking or thinking of taking Further Maths A-level. It will be hosted here at the Department of Computing, Imperial College London on 11 June 2014 at 1pm.

Mathematics lies at the heart of Computing. From artificial intelligence to photo-realistic computer graphics, from biomedical imaging to quantum computing – all are underpinned by mathematical models. Find out how you can use your Maths to solve computing problems. Meet some of our professors and lecturers and learn about their cutting-edge research.

You’ll discover: how the magnetic resonance images of the heart can be mathematically analysed to predict defects; how Maths and computing combine to allow you to calculate the exact combination of shares in an investment which will give you the best return for lowest risk; how mathematical descriptions of individual animal behaviour lead to complex swarm behaviour in large colonies. Using mathematical and computing techniques, you can discover how the body keeps its internal clock accurate using only simple computations with proteins. These computing problems all share the need for solid mathematical foundations.

After the talks you will have an opportunity to look round the Department of Computing and have a go at solving some Mathematical problems of your own.

Applications for this course will be taken from the University of London Taster Course website.
