Staff and students from the Physics Department at Imperial College London helped organise and run the Institute of Physics (IoP) stand at the Big Bang fair at London’s ExCeL centre. The Big Bang Fair is an annual event and is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK. Over 170 organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors, had stands at the fair to showcase their work to the public.

Staff from the Physics Department used magic tricks to demonstrate and explain some of the fascinating applications of Quantum mechanics, such as quantum teleportation, entanglement and tunnelling.

The Centre for Plastic Electronics (CPE) brought along some of their fascinating new technologies, such as the new plastic kindle, which can be bent, folded and is (almost) indestructible! It is hoped that the groups exciting new discoveries will change the world around us, and these scientists are literally building the world of tomorrow.

The visitors enjoyed seeing practical experiments and took the opportunity to ask questions about this work. It is hoped that the Physics Department’s staff and students inspired some of the scientists of the future at this event.
