The Earth League is a worldwide voluntary alliance of leading scientists and institutions dealing with planetary processes and sustainability issues. This alliance will focus on the production, dissemination and application of knowledge needed for managing anthropogenic global change according to the principles of sustainable development. This will be followed by the Inaugural Lecture entitled “Earth Stewardship for World Prosperity”, given by Professor Johan Rockström, Executive Director of the Stockholm Resilience Center and Professor in natural resource management at Stockholm University.

Biographies

Professor Johan Rockström is a founding member of the Earth League. He is an internationally recognized scientist on global sustainability issues, where he has led the recent development of the new Planetary Boundaries framework for human development in the current era of rapid global change.

 He is a leading scientist on global water resources, and strategies to build resilience in water scarce regions of the world, with more than 15 years’ experience from applied water research in tropical regions, and more than 100 research publications in fields ranging from applied land and water management to global sustainability.

 Rockström was awarded the title “Swede of the Year” in 2009 for his work on bridging science on climate change to policy and society. He was ranked the most influential person on environmental issues in Sweden 2011.

Professor Guy Brasseur is a founding member and Acting Chair of the Earth League.  He is the director of the Climate Service Center, Hamburg. Previously he was associate director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, Colorado, and head of NCARs Earth and Sun Systems Laboratory (ESSL). From 1999 to 2006 he was director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, and the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ). Guy Brasseur was a Coordinating Lead Author for the fourth Assessment Report (Working Group 1) of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
