Abstract
Application of nanotechnology, nanocomposite materials and stem cells are a new generation of tools in the development of human organs. Their research and development is based on a multidisciplinary team approach from basic science to the clinician. We have developed and patented a family of nanoparticles and nanocomposites materials in the development of organs, and in addition have been using stem cells to enhance organ function.
In 2011 we have developed applied clinically first in man synthetic trachea with autologous bone marrow stem cells, lacrimal duct conduit and vascular bypass graft using above principal. Currently work is progress in development of many other organs in our laboratories, including oesophagus, small intestine, coronary artery bypass graft, larynx, heart valve, nose and ear for reconstruction. Figure shows development has been carried out at UCL by Seifalian group.
In my talk initially I present our platform technology including application of nanoparticles in cancer treatment and then application in development of organ.
