The Childrens’ Christmas Demonstration Lecture explores the excitement of scientific discovery for all ages.  Kids, families, students, teachers and the curious are invited to take part.

About the lecture

This lecture will show how we can break into your brain.  It will combine cross-disciplinary computational and experimental approaches to show how the brain and its neural circuits make decisions, how it learns and how it controls movements. Interactive demonstrations will show how neuroscientific findings enable the development of technology for medicine and research.

The only way our brain can interact with the world is through movement. Conversely, your motions may reflect the state of your brain. Neurotechnology, the fusion of neuroscience and technology, enables Aldo Faisal and his colleagues to exploit this fundamental link to overcome movement disorders and help paralysed people.

Why not come and see how we can break into your brain?

The lecture will be followed by drinks and mince pies.

About the speaker

Dr Aldo Faisal is in charge of the ‘Brains and Behaviour Lab’, Leader of the Sensorimotor learning lab (Bioengineering) and of the Machine Learning group (Computing) at Imperial College London. His research applies methods from computing, physics and engineering with experimental studies in humans to understand our brains and behaviour from first principles.  Our brain solves similar problems to those of computers and  robots, such as reading this text, manipulating an object or learning to ride a bicycle. Taking this computational view, we can apply theoretical frameworks from engineering and  computer science to study the brain’s function and structure. His interest lies in the relationships between brains and behaviour, as movement behaviour is the only way through which the brain can interact with the world.
