On 17th & 18th May 2011, Dr Magnan from the Physics Department at Imperial College London, travelled to France to speak to school pupils about CERN.

Dr Anne-Marie Magnan is a Research Associate, in the High Energy Physics group at Imperial College London. In May 2011, she travelled to France to speak to hundreds of school children about current research activities at CERN. The school pupils were aged from 5 – 18 years old and all attended schools in Amberieu-en-Bugey and the surrounding areas.

The Expo Sciences fair is organised every two years, with the objective of bringing young people and professionals together, to explore science and technology. During the 2 day event, various experiments, demonstrations and talks took place and all of the exhibitions focused on an area of science such as renewable energies and robotics. Numerous exhibitors attended the fair and presented about their various areas of research and many experiments were designed by school children, as part of projects they had undertaken at school.

Dr Anne-Marie Magnan presented a discussion session about current research activities at CERN. CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research and is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Dr Magnan presented to audiences of more than 100 visitors including school children and teachers.

After the discussion session, Dr Magnan ran a Q&A session and answered the children’s questions about her work. Dr Magnan said: “It is very challenging to scale the answer appropriately to the age of the child asking the question: I enjoyed this experience very much.”
