The RCSU Science Challenge is an annual national essay competition that aims to encourage scientific debate, reasoning and the communication of science in a public-friendly context. This Launch event gives our judges the opportunity to explain what ‘science communication’ means to them, relative to their specific fields of interest and their expertise. This year’s talks will focus on Ethics, Journalism, Politics and Sustainability in science

Speakers

  • Professor Lord Robert Winston is currently Professor of Science & Society at Imperial College, and is household name due to his expertise and programmes with the BBC. Lord Winston has championed the RCSU Science Challenge since its inception in 2006. 
  • Pallab Ghosh, an alumni of the College, and past Felix Editor, is currently the BBC’s Science Correspondent. His experiences of presenting science to the population make Pallab the authority on Science Communication.
  • Mark Henderson, now Director of Communications at the Wellcome Trust re-joins the judging panel this year. Mark had previously been the Science Editor of The Times for many years and is the author of “50 Genetics Ideas You Really Need to Know” and “The Geek Manifesto: Why Science Matters”.
  • Peter Lacy is the Managing Director for Sustainability at Accenture, the management consultancy conglomerate.
  • Dr Jad Marrouche is an ex-President of the RCSU. Having completed his Physics Masters at Imperial College, Jad then studied for his PhD jointly with Imperial and CERN, Switzerland.
