Further information
Born in Hungary, Ervin Bossanyi (1891-1975) was a major artist in stained glass and in several other media including painting, sculpture and design for metalwork, furniture and textiles. Happiest in the peace and sanctity of his studio and shunning publicity, his name is not well known outside the stained glass world even though his work is to be found in famous cathedrals – Canterbury (4 windows) and Washington D.C, other prestigious public buildings and renowned museums such as the V&A and Tate Britain, as well as in private collections in several countries.
This illustrated talk will focus on some particularly remarkable features of stained glass as a medium and aspects of this passionate artist’s life and work.
Jo Bossanyi is the artist’s son. He witnessed the creation of much of his father’s work and is co-editor with Sarah Brown (Director of the York Glaziers Trust and Lecturer in Art History, University of York) of a comprehensive book on Ervin Bossanyi’s life and work with contributions by an international team of specialists which was published late in 2008.
