Miranda Mowbray (HP Labs) will talk about her work on resource-sharing in P2P communities.
P2P resource-sharing communities depend on members’ willingness to contribute their resources. Dr. Mowbray will present some data from BitTorrent communities which identify factors associated with high contribution, and use this to suggest general ways of encouraging contributions in P2P communities.
One suggestion is that in order to encourage high contribution levels, designers should try to harness both economic/reciprocation motivations for contribution, and altruistic/social motivations for contribution, within the same P2P community.
Miranda Mowbray is a Technical Contributor at HP Labs, where she researches P2P technologies. She co-founded e-mint, the association of online community professionals. Her PhD is in Algebra, from Queen Mary College London.
