On Wednesday 14 November 2007, Imperial College alumnus Brian May will give the Annual Alumni Lecture on the subject of his recently submitted PhD thesis Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud. All alumni of the College are invited to this lecture, which will be followed by a drinks reception, on Imperial’s South Kensington Campus.

The subject of Brian May’s 48,000 word PhD thesis, zodiacal dust originates from the tails of comets and asteroid collisions forming  disk shaped zodiacal clouds that can sometimes be seen with the naked eye as a triangular glow above the horizon just before sunrise or after sunset.

Brian’s thesis was put on hold while he found fame as guitarist in one of Britain’s most successful bands of the past three decades, Queen. Thirty-six years later, in August 2007, Brian returned to the College’s South Kensington Campus to hand in his thesis Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud, which demonstrates that the dust clouds orbit in the same direction as planets within our solar system.
