Winton Capital Management Ltd cordially invites you to the 2007/8 Winton Lecture Series by Jim Al-Khalili on; “QUANTUM: Still Crazy After All These Years“
Abstract: Over the past one hundred years, as scientists probed deep into the heart of matter to unlock the secrets of the subatomic world they realised they had to create a whole new science, one that is completely counterintuitive and strange and yet so powerful that it underpins much of modern day science and technology. This lecture will be a whirlwind tour of the crazy world of quantum physics. How can an atom be in two places at once? How does it know when it is being observed? Is Schroedinger’s unfortunate cat really both dead and alive at the same time? Why was Einstein so unhappy with the theory? Beginning with the famous two-slit experiment, the talk will cover the various interpretations of quantum mechanics and culminate in how quantum weirdness might be utilised in the 21st century to build a quantum computer.
The talk will be based on the speaker’s best-selling book, “Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed” and his recent BBC4 TV series, ATOM.
