Abstract: There is a growing belief that the innovation process – the ways firms respond to market and technological opportunities by organizing and resourcing the development of new products and services – is changing dramatically. In this view the process is becoming more complex and open, involving many more players. It is using new kinds of supportive technology, such as e-science and virtual and rapid prototyping. And it is using novel approaches to organizing creative people.

The debate will begin by introducing some of the latest thinking about these changes by innovation researchers and innovative companies. The following discussion will address the resulting challenges and their consequences. It will consider what these changes mean for the innovative performance of firms and for the people working in them. It will address the questions of what new strategies, investments and practices are needed for organizations to lead innovation in the future.
