Neonatal sepsis in Southern Africa: shifting the paradigm
I am a clinical associate professor and honorary consultant in paediatric infectious diseases, working between Imperial and The Health Research Unit-Zimbabwe (THRU-Zim) in Harare, Zimbabwe. I will argue that neonatal sepsis is now predominantly a healthcare-associated infection in low-resource settings, with a vital need for innovation both in infection prevention and control to prevent the further generation of highly resistant bacteria. In Zimbabwe I work with the Neotree team, led by NIHR Professor of Global Child Health Michelle Heys at UCL, using routine healthcare data from >50,000 newborns to develop AI-enabled clinical decision support tools for risk stratification for neonatal sepsis at the bedside.
