Join us for the next instalment of the Wright-Fleming Institute Infection and Immunity Seminar, with speaker Professor Ravi Gupta (University of Cambridge).
About the speaker
Having completed his specialist medical training in infectious diseases and a Masters in International Public Health at Harvard as a Fulbright scholar, Professor Ravi Gupta pursued a PhD at UCL on HIV-1 drug resistance and molecular virology.
Since then, his major activity has been in the field of antiviral therapy for treatment of HIV, and he has led a number of studies, both clinical and in vitro, aimed at addressing the global emerging threat of drug resistant HIV-1. The clinical/epidemiological studies have impacted health policy by alerting governments and international agencies to rising levels of HIV drug resistance in some of the world’s poorest regions.
This program of work has been continually informed by clinical work as an infectious diseases physician in London and more recently Cambridge where he has been able to study unique individuals with HIV in order to better understand viral reservoirs and how this knowledge can lead to a cure of HIV. This has led to the recent demonstration of the world’s second HIV long term remission by stem cell transplantation using delta 32 homozygous donor cells. He is now seeking further curative strategies for HIV.
