Speakers

  •  Dr. Anil Bharath, Reader at the Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London
Dr. Anil Anthony Bharath is Reader in Image Analysis and on the Research Board of Imperial’s  Data Science Institute.  He holds a degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from UCL and obtained a PhD from Imperial College.
Dr. Bharath has published in the field of imaging, image analysis, and signal processing, and has extensive experience in computer vision. In 1998, he demonstrated the first application of steerable filters to shape detection, an area of image analysis. Later contributions included the use of Bayesian marginalisation in very early-stage computer vision, focus-of-attention methods, and custom-designed wavelet transforms to analyse images in a scalable manner. The analysis of visual data, including new algorithms and system architectures, continues to be his main research interest.
In 2008, Dr. Bharath spun out the company Cortexica Vision Systems, which applies simplified models of the behaviour of visual neurons to visual search. See http://www.bicv.org/ for more details, as well as a brief discussion on how these models are related to modern convolutional neural networks.

  • Dr. Ben Reeve, CTO of CustoMem
Ben is a bioengineer and CTO of CustoMem. He completed his MA in biological sciences at the University of Cambridge and a PhD in the Ellis Lab at Imperial College where his research focused on engineering non-model organisms for biomaterials production. He was a member, then supervisor, of two award-winning iGEM teams. He has seven publications and two patents in the areas of synthetic biology and bio-based materials.
CustoMem help to protect environmental and human health by manufacturing new materials to capture target chemicals. Our novel bio-based technologies enable the design and manufacture of adsorbents to selectively remove the most harmful pollutants from water. CustoMem is based in the Imperial College Incubator in White City and the lead product, targeting fluorinated pollutants (PFAS) and is being trialed with customers around Europe and the US.

  • Dr. Stefan Claesen PhD DIC CSci MIEE MIPEM – Chief Executive Officer at Visbion
Stefan has significant experience in the application of information technology within the healthcare industry. In recent years this has involved the development of specific IT solutions for a wide range of medical specialities including minimal access surgery, general practice and radiology. Stefan has been involved in the development of the DICOM standard for medical image communication. In particular, he played a key role in the development and verification of the ultrasound sections of the standard, advised on the development of the X-ray angiography supplement, and is now involved in the ophthalmology definitions as a member of WG9. He is often asked to act as an independent assessor of DICOM compliance and conformance. Stefan has worked extensively on international collaborations in medical informatics, with institutions including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Southern California (USC). He currently holds an Honorary Research Fellowship at Imperial College

  • Ms Vanela Bushi, Director of Syneos Health
