Description

This public event evening outlines the global burden of traumatic brain injury. Trauma is the commonest cause of death in under 45’s and brain injury is the commonest cause of that death. However, the morbidity and effect on society is considerably more with over 50% of homeless and prison populations reporting a significant head injury. Globally the cost of traumatic brain injury is vast. The evening will discuss this endemic disease and suggest how it can be tackled. Additionally, we will overview the effects of altitude and space on the brain and how we can learn about the brain in extreme environments. Finally, we will have a neurosurgery simulation with the audience having the opportunity to undertake an operation to remove a blood clot from the brain!
