The Centre for Bio-Inspired Technology at Imperial College London is a multidisciplinary research centre within the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Circuits and Systems Research Group), based in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering in the Bessemer Building. The Centre specialises in the development of advanced electronic, sensing and system-level technologies for biomedical applications, working in close partnership with clinicians and medical professionals. Its research spans integrated circuits, microsystems and embedded intelligence, with a strong emphasis on translating cutting-edge engineering into practical technologies for healthcare and wellbeing.

Our Vision

We take inspiration from biological systems to create advanced technologies that are effective, efficient and aligned with the needs of patients and healthcare systems worldwide. By mimicking principles found in nature and integrating them with state-of-the-art semiconductor, sensing and computational technologies, the Centre pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in medical devices, diagnostics and monitoring.

Collaborations and Impact

We work closely with clinical, academic and industry partners to deliver real-world impact from research. A key outcome of this activity is the creation of successful spin-out companies, including ProtonDx, MintNeuro, DNA Electronics, DNA Nudge (now part of GeneFluence), and Toumaz Technology (now part of The Surgical Company). These ventures demonstrate the Centre’s strong track record in translating advanced electronic and biomedical technologies into clinical and commercial applications.
