Structural Health Monitoring

Recent advances in battery technology, wireless communication and electronics has meant that permanently installing sensors is becoming increasingly viable and attractive. The sensors provide near-continuous, real-time data which provides an enriched source of structural integrity information. We are working closely with the Non-Destructive Evaluation group to develop monitoring technology that delivers pertinent information and we are developing new methods that utilise this newly available stream of information for enhanced structural integrity assessment.

NDE Group

The group is recognised as a world leader within NDE, having produced several important research outcomes which are now exploited by industry, both in the UK and around the world. Since the late 1980s, the group has contributed to many areas within NDE, including ultrasonic guided waves, electromagnetics and imaging, and today has a wide range of projects continuing across a large number of fields. The group leads the RCNDE, the UK Research Centre in NDE, consisting of 6 UK universities and 16 industrial members, and through this helps to steer the UK research direction. In total it has published over 200 papers in academic journals, and over 50 PhD students have graduated from the group.

RCNDE

The NDE group at Imperial College founded the UK Research Centre in NDE (RCNDE) in 2003. The university members of the RCNDE include Imperial College and the universities of Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham, Strathclyde and Warwick. The Centre aims to combine innovative technical excellence with industrial applicability. It functions as an industrial club and additional research, feasibility and technology transfer projects are selected to meet the member’s long term vision for NDE across a range of industry sectors. Current industrial members include Rolls-Royce, Airbus, dstl, BAE Systems, Shell, National Nuclear Laboratory, Wood, EDF, Hitachi, SKF, Tenaris, and ONR. The Centre is also closely linked to the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantitative NDE which offers industrial Engineering Doctorates and PhDs.
